Our homes are built entirely through
donations from individuals, schools, religious organizations,
foundations and corporations. The homes we build cost $140,000
to $170,000 to build including the purchase of land. Our biggest
challenge is finding affordable land in Nassau County, and
this limits us to building one or two homes a year. Volunteers
do almost all of the construction of our homes.
Once the home is completed, we provide
a no down payment, interest free mortgage to a qualified family
selected from Nassau County. The family selected is one that
would not normally be able to afford to buy a home. Mortgage
payments we receive from our homes are put back into building
the next Habitat home.

| In addition
to building houses, HFHNC seeks to make affordable housing "a
matter of conscience". With that in mind, our organization
sends speakers to local schools and universities, corporations
and businesses. We seek to spread the word about Habitat and
energize individuals and groups to take on the challenge of
addressing housing issues in Nassau County. The HFHNC construction
site provides a safe harbor where persons of diverse backgrounds
reach across barriers of color, class, religion or language
to build something positive together. |
